During weekends we usually hang around on our couch.  Even though we don’t do something together, we like to be next to each other.  When we were buying the couch, we discussed the size for a while.  Smaller and cheaper one versus bigger and a bit more expensive one.  We went for a big one and it was definitely a good choice.

I’m a big fan of cooking.  And I try to cook breakfast for my husband most days.  Sometimes though, especially on the weekends, I just want to curl up on the couch.  Then, it’s time for delivery food.

We don’t have many choices.  We rotate the menu between pizza, curry, fried chicken, and Mc Donalds. We try to eat healthy food, but it’s fun to order food from time to time.

We like to stay in the house and hang out with each other.  But one thing we like to do outside is hiking.  We bought a book of hiking courses that can be reached by train.

We usually take the first train and hike for about 3 hours and come back around noon.  I often cook Korean spicy fried chicken at night.  Since we spend a lot of calories, we can have this fatty food with a bit less guilt.

I love hiking. Even though I have a fear of bugs, I like to listen to the sound of nature in the mountains.  In the early morning, we can enjoy our surroundings without hearing other people’s voices.  We took a break from hiking this summer.  I can feel the temperature starting to drop.  We should pack our bags and go hiking soon.

While waiting for the visa for Japan, we went to Korea.  We visited a museum in Seoul and saw great light installations.  My husband took a picture of me with one of the works.

Being photographed by someone, I’m looking at the person rather than the lens.  I often feel awkward when getting my picture taken by a professional photographer.  In the drawing, my gaze is neutral.  It shows how comfortable I was looking at him without any additional effort with an unnatural smile.

I often stare at the light in the house. When the light shines into the house, it shows it’s obstacles as a shadow.  Many times, I want to draw or paint those moments but they usually don’t linger long.  So I just stare at it or take a picture if I have a camera with me at that moment.  Shortly after, a new light comes in with a different shadow or disappears.

When we arrived in Japan, the first thing we ate was Japanese curry.  I was enjoying my curry until I saw a small fly.  I’m a bug-phobic. I’m so scared of bugs, I have very sharp eyes for them.  My husband was taking pictures of me and caught my stone face and body.

I think it’s ridiculous that I’m scared of tiny bugs, but I can’t help it.  I sometimes think about doing a project on bugs so I can get over the fear but I’m not ready yet.  It makes me cringe just thinking about it.

At that time we didn’t have a long-term visa, we couldn’t get a house.  So we stayed at a hotel near the base that we know well. Even though the hotel room was pretty small, it was nice to see the streets from higher up.

We visited our storage unit to organize for shipping things to Japan. I dug out his old stuff and found this Air Force hat. I didn’t know at that time but I happened to be wearing a shirt that had the U.S. flag pattern. It’s a pretty good match I think.

From the moment I left New Jersey, I’ve been dealing with packing and unpacking. Working on more packing business was tiring. But this time I felt good because I knew we’ll be together from now on.

In summer 2014, he finally came back from Afghanistan for good.  We met at JFK and went to Virginia the next day.  The first restaurant we went to in Virginia was Buffalo Wild Wings.

Fried chicken is my comfort food.  My parents were both working when I was young.  When they were coming home late, my sister and I often ordered fried chicken for dinner.  The store’s lady knew us so we could order without paying.  My mom would pay on the way home.  I think because of that it became my comfort food.  And I can eat it very well.  If you see my plate after I’m done eating, the only thing you can find is a high pile of very clean bones.

After I got very comfortable with my husband, I stopped pretending to be a bit reserved and started tearing the chicken up.  He was surprised at first but now he likes to see me clearing them all.

One day, when he was still in Afghanistan and I was in New Jersey, I was talking to him via email.  Some reason, I was in a pretty bad mood.  I was complaining about something to him.  After about half an hour, somebody rang the bell.  It was delivery from our local fried chicken store.  My husband ordered it for me all the way from Afghanistan.  I was so moved and it still touches my heart.  I think this story will be one of our legends to tell our children later on.

Before we left Virginia, we visited a beach.  I wanted to swim at the beach while in Virginia but we didn’t have time for it.  I asked him to drop by the beach on the day we were heading back to New Jersey.  We walked for a while enjoying the salty breeze. It was pretty early in the morning so we could hear the waves without any interruption.

It was the perfect way to start the journey.

Going back to New Jersey from Virginia was simple. We put all my stuff in the storage facility and rented a smaller car. I was excited to be on the road again. It was still hot. Everything was yellow from the heat.

The small cornfield reminded me of when I visited my sister in Illinois back in 2007. She took me to Indiana to see her friends and there were corn walls next to us for almost the entire trip.

This kind of memory makes me realize how much time has passed and how we have changed. And I hope I’ve become a better person.

I know I talked about Honey so many times. But it’s never enough to say how much I look forward to seeing her every time I visit my in-laws. The first time I saw her, she was too small for me. I’m used to small but heavier dogs. I told my husband I don’t like how small she is because I feel like I can hurt her too easily. But after I hung out with her so much, I lost that thought completely. My husband still teases me about how quickly I changed my opinion about her.

I even wanted to have a small dog like her here in Japan but unfortunately, we can’t have any animals in our house. This is one of the biggest reasons I want to go back to the U.S. soon.

Beside Honey, what I enjoy in Virginia is the old downtown area. Not much happens there but I like the semi European looking town. Our favorite bar is also located there so that is plus.

When he went to Afghanistan, he put all his belongings in a storage facility close to his folks’ house.  And we decided to do the same with my stuff.  I just left the minimum amount of things that I needed and packed everything up.

We rented a U-Haul truck and drove to Virginia.  We took turns loading the truck.  One of us watched the truck and organized while the other brought boxes.  I was the one who watched the truck most of the time but I moved many boxes too.  I remember it that way and I’m sticking to it.

I’ve never been in a truck before.  It was uncomfortable for a while.  It was just too high up.  Eventually, I got used to it and had fun looking around.  Driving with him is always delightful.

After we got married I started to cook most of the Korean food that I crave.  One thing I don’t cook at home was Korean barbeque.  Cleaning many dishes is one thing but the smell trapped in the house is a bit too much.

Here is me cooking the barbeque at one of our favorite Korean restaurants in Virginia, that is now closed.  This restaurant wasn’t specialized for barbequing so the experience was a bit odd, it was too quiet, but it satisfied my craving.  In Korea, barbeque places are usually very crowded and lively. So much smoke in the air.  A lot of talking and drinking is happening.  I miss that atmosphere sometimes.

After a good meal, we took a longer route to go back home.  The sunset over the river was beautiful.

Have you had a Korean barbeque?  Thinking about it makes me want to have some!
