Sleeping Dingo Dreaming Of The Hiking (and more)

iPad drawing 2020

Early fall last year, we went to Mount Lillian Loop trail of Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington. The beginning of the route was a bit hard to find. Thankfully we met very nice people at the campground who showed us a map and the direction.

It was about a seven-mile trail, but it got longer because we kept going out of the path. A couple of sections of the course didn’t have enough trees to protect us from the sun. Because of these unexpected hiccups, the hike was more difficult than we imagined. In the end, we had to stop pretty often, and every time we did, Dingo lay down next to our feet.
But I loved the trail. Burnt trees from the fire back in 2012 made the forest feel eerie. Occasionally We met a bunch of colorful flowers. Intense-colored flowers on mostly dusty roads made it surreal.

When we finally finished the hiking and spotted our car, Dingo was ready to hop on. He started whining and pulling the leas so hard towards the car.

The road to the trail was narrow, and one side was next to a cliff. Many off-road vehicles were coming to the trail when we were leaving. We had to wait at a corner to be safe. It was a bit of a wait but fun to look at all the different cars.

When we got home, all of us took a nice long nap. After my husband and I woke up, Dingo followed us but decided to sleep more on his bed. I was looking at him, wondering if he was dreaming about the hike—so many smells to sniff for him from the trees, flowers, dirt, and small animals. I enjoy taking Dingo to mountains or flatland trails. I can see him being extra happy in those environments. I’m not sure when, but I’m already looking forward to our next hiking.

Acrylic and pencil on clay board 8″ x 10″ (20.32 x 25.4 cm)

After a couple of days from the hike, I made this small painting of Dingo walking on a narrow path surrounded by pink flowers. This scene was the most memorable area for me from the trail.

I also made Day Color paintings about the hike. I fear height, so I couldn’t go close to the cliff to take a good picture or video at the peak. But I took a nice picture of my husband. Drawing and painting only from the memories have a charm that making art from a photograph doesn’t have.

I hope everyone has a beautiful week!

Sleeping Dingo on the couch while I’m reading

Whenever I decide to read for a while, I like to make myself comfortable on the couch. When it’s a bit chilly, I put cushions all around and cover myself with a blanket. When I about to start reading, Dingo brings his colorful dotted blanket to me. He wants to join me on the couch. I put his blanket between my legs so I can still stretch out. When I tap on his spot, Dingo jumps on and circle around a few times before lying down. After a while, I start hearing his snoring. I slowly put my book down and grab my iPad very quietly and start drawing him. I sketch him first just in case he changes his position, which he does a lot. After done sketching and adding colors, I carefully put my iPad down and open my book again. Even though reading is a very private activity, his company just makes it better.

When he went to Afghanistan, he put all his belongings in a storage facility close to his folks’ house.  And we decided to do the same with my stuff.  I just left the minimum amount of things that I needed and packed everything up.

We rented a U-Haul truck and drove to Virginia.  We took turns loading the truck.  One of us watched the truck and organized while the other brought boxes.  I was the one who watched the truck most of the time but I moved many boxes too.  I remember it that way and I’m sticking to it.

I’ve never been in a truck before.  It was uncomfortable for a while.  It was just too high up.  Eventually, I got used to it and had fun looking around.  Driving with him is always delightful.

He started working in Afghanistan after he got out of the military.  It was the most intense long distance relationship ever.  The phone calls weren’t something we could have regularly.  And if I heard any news about the place, I got really worried.

During that time, he visited me in New Jersey.  I had to leave the country soon, so he came to help me move my stuff.  Because he was too tired from work and the flight, we stayed in most of the time.  But there was one place we needed to visit; Nintendo World.

I had to take a bus to go into the city.  Waiting for the bus with him instead of alone was nice and surreal.  The pointy-eared apartment was my building.

At Nintendo World, we tried some games and bought some goods.  He is holding a mug we bought.  It was a fun day.

After we got married I started to cook most of the Korean food that I crave.  One thing I don’t cook at home was Korean barbeque.  Cleaning many dishes is one thing but the smell trapped in the house is a bit too much.

Here is me cooking the barbeque at one of our favorite Korean restaurants in Virginia, that is now closed.  This restaurant wasn’t specialized for barbequing so the experience was a bit odd, it was too quiet, but it satisfied my craving.  In Korea, barbeque places are usually very crowded and lively. So much smoke in the air.  A lot of talking and drinking is happening.  I miss that atmosphere sometimes.

After a good meal, we took a longer route to go back home.  The sunset over the river was beautiful.

Have you had a Korean barbeque?  Thinking about it makes me want to have some!

At the beach, we had so much fun.  I don’t know how long we were in the water, but I remember I was so tired from laughing too much.  I jumped into the water from his shoulder.  We chased each other around.   Also, he snuck up to me under water like a sea monster.  We finally came out from the water and relaxed for a bit.  He played rock skipping.  I tried too but I’m not very good at it.  All my rocks were going straight into the water.

It was our last time we went into the water at a beach.  It was such a fun day.  I can’t wait for our next time in the sea!

I usually don’t like taking a nap.  Not because I don’t like napping, but it affects my regular sleep at night.  Having a short nap after a fun and active day is a very nice thing though.

After we had so much fun at the beach, I napped hard.  I woke up around sunset, and we went out for dinner.  I love the time of sunset and sunrise.  Refreshed by good rest, sunset felt like the sunrise as our day was restarting.

Do you like taking a nap?

Recently I learned that sleep is very important to our overall health.  Less than six hours of sleep could lead to a decade shorter lifespan. It also can cause cancer and Alzheimer.  I usually sleep a good amount.  Now I try not to miss a good night sleep every day.

Sleep well, everyone!

Every time we visit Virginia, we always go to Busch Gardens.  I love drinking beer and walking around the park.  I’m scared of roller coasters but love to ride them.  It takes me some time to get used to the feeling again but once I do, the fear becomes joy.

I always liked to go to an amusement park when I was young.  It was too expensive for me as a kid, and my parents weren’t very interested in going there so I couldn’t go often.  One of the kids I was jealous of had an annual membership of the park.  When I have kids I think I’ll always bring them to the park.

In Korea, there is a giant wooden roller coaster in Everland park.  It drops 12 times and the ride is over 3 minutes!  The first time I rode it, my friend almost cried and I thought it’d never stop.  My husband is a big fan of roller coasters, but he hasn’t ridden it yet.  I really want to bring him there soon.

If you like to ride a roller coaster and chance to visit Korea, you should check it out.

Many days when we drove through mountain roads, the weather was either cloudy or rainy.  We loved hearing rain hitting the windshield while listening to nice music.  One mountaintop had an observatory.  It was too foggy so we couldn’t see much of the view.  The surrounding area was so beautiful though.  All the thin tall trees were hiding and sticking out in the fog.

One night the rain was pouring hard.  We were driving next to a river.  We saw so many small rocks on the road.  Shortly after, we realized that those were not rocks but frogs.  It was a horrifying experience.  We felt so bad.  We still talk about those innocent frogs that died that night from time to time.

I’d name the drawing of my husband as ‘The frog killer’.

One time we drove along a route, we ended up at a dinosaur museum in the middle of nowhere.  We didn’t go in but took some pictures with a tyrannosaurus statue.  We took the route many times more and every time we reached the museum, we stopped and took pictures again with the same statue.  I played around with this brachiosaurus-like statue.  I tried to pose my hands like tyrannosaurus’ feet but failed.

I love seeing small shrines in the middle of mountain roads.  They usually have something red and they are very eye-catching among green trees.

When I was about ten years old, I often went to my friend’s house who had a video game console we played for hours.  I’ve never gotten serious equipment for games.  Games have a bad reputation in Korea.  Most parents make sure their kids don’t play games.  After I got older and moved away from my friend, I lost interest in games until I met my husband.  He is the biggest fan of video games I’ve ever met.  He doesn’t only play but also knows a lot of aspects of games such as the industry, game design, history and etc.  Since I stopped paying attention to games for a long time, I was so surprised by how much the technology had advanced.  Also, I got admiration for the art of them.  I started playing a couple of games with him, and now I got some favorite games that I play from time to time.  So far, my favorite game is ‘The Last of Us’ which I played so many times I can’t even count.

Do you have a favorite game?

Also, is anybody still using mp3 players?

The right picture was the Christmas gift from my husband in 2009.  My (so far) last mp3 player.  Having one device for almost everything is convenient but sometimes I miss the time I could listen to songs without getting silly notifications.  I might start using it again.

Early Spring

It is still a bit chilly, but spring is definitely around the corner.   When I rode my bicycle to go grocery shopping last week, I saw plum tree flowers starting to bloom here and there around my neighborhood.  They look very similar to Sakura but they bloom in late winter through early spring.  Sometimes they bloom through cold snow.  Because of this, plum blossoms in Korea represent a scholar’s fidelity.   I am always sorry when the winter ends.  But I love watching baby leaves are coming out from naked trees and all the colorful flowers start to bloom in spring.  Summer comes, and it is my least favorite season.  If I do not experience the summer heat, I probably do not appreciate winter’s coldness fully.  So I am very much looking forward to next winter.
